What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are a long-term solution for missing teeth. They function as artificial roots that anchor new teeth directly into the jawbone, restoring both the visible tooth and the underlying structure that supports your bite.

Each dental implant has three essential components:

  • The implant itself is a small, medical-grade titanium post that is surgically placed into the jawbone. Over time, it bonds with the bone in a process called osseointegration, creating a stable foundation.
  • The abutment is a connector that sits above the gumline. Once the implant has healed, the abutment is attached to it to support your final tooth restoration.
  • The final restoration can be a crown, bridge, or denture. Each one is custom-made to match your natural teeth in both appearance and function.
Dental Grown Graphic

This diagram shows the three parts of a dental implant: the titanium implant post, which is placed in the jawbone; the abutment, which connects the implant to the restoration; and the dental crown, which replicates the look and function of a natural tooth.

Implants can be used in a variety of ways:

  • To replace a single missing tooth with an implant-supported crown
  • To restore multiple teeth with an implant-supported bridge
  • To anchor a full arch of prosthetic teeth using multiple implants

For patients who need full-arch replacement, implant-supported dentures offer a secure and modern alternative to traditional removable dentures.

I have to admit I was not relishing the thought of having Two crowns that were in need of repair done at the same time , but then again it would be done with. I can’t really explain how stunned I was that it was all done in Two hours with the most professional and comforting care. Technology has come a long way in being able to have a real crown made and put on in this amount of time. I can’t thank Dr Rebecca Angus and her staff for their care, concern and professionalism.

I have been going here for about 40 years. I have always been satisfied with the staff, the hygienists, and the dentists I have seen, from Dr Bill to Dr. Rebecca. There are never long waits in the waiting room, and for me, appointments have not been hard to get. I always recommend them to anyone looking for a dentist. I might add I have not had dental insurance for years, until a year ago. They only take one, Delta. This is a consideration for new patients. Mine kicked in in Nov, 2025, thankfully! I am grateful that they were always helpful when I had difficulty paying. We worked it out. I want to add that all of the staff there that I have encountered were professional and personable. When I had a crown done, I was surprised that they make them on site. I got to sit and relax while it was made and shaped just for me....and it didnt take long. Techniques and procedures and equipment have changed over these 40 some years, and they have kept up and deliver the best. Yes, I do recommend Angus Dentistry to anyone who asks for a recommendation, and to some who dont....lol !

Benefits of Dental Implants

Dental implants do more than fill a gap in your smile. They restore essential function and provide a strong, natural-looking solution that supports long-term oral health.

  • Restores natural appearance and chewing function
  • Helps prevent jawbone deterioration after tooth loss
  • Does not rely on adjacent teeth for support
  • Offers a stable, long-term alternative to removable appliances
  • Improves speech and comfort
  • Custom-made to blend seamlessly with your smile

Who Is a Good Candidate?

You may be a candidate for dental implants if you:

  • Are missing one or more teeth
  • Have healthy gums and sufficient bone volume
  • Do not smoke or are willing to stop during healing
  • Are in overall good health and free of uncontrolled medical conditions

We use advanced imaging to evaluate bone structure and recommend bone grafting when needed to support implant success.

The Dental Implant Process

Each case is unique, but most dental implant treatments follow this general sequence:

  1. Consultation and imaging: We begin with a full exam, medical history review, and 3D imaging to evaluate the area and develop a treatment plan. If we find that the bone in the area is too thin or has receded, we may recommend a bone grafting procedure to help create a stable foundation. This step ensures the implant has enough support to integrate properly and function long term.
  2. Implant placement: The titanium post is placed into the jawbone using guided implant surgery for added precision and accuracy. Local anesthesia is used, and sedation is available if needed. In most cases, a healing abutment is attached to help shape the gum tissue as the implant integrates.
  3. Healing and integration: Over the next few months, the bone and implant fuse together in a process called osseointegration, creating a strong foundation.
  4. Abutment and final restoration: Once healing is complete, the healing abutment is removed, and the final abutment is placed to support your permanent restoration. Impressions are then taken to design your custom crown, bridge, or denture. Many single-tooth crowns can be milled in-office for faster turnaround.

Dental Implant Healing Stages

The dental implant healing process involves several distinct phases:

  • Week 1–2: Soft tissue healing; minor swelling or soreness is normal
  • Months 1–3: Osseointegration; the implant bonds with the jawbone
  • Months 3–6: Final restoration placed once integration is complete

Every case moves at its own pace. We’ll guide you through each stage of your dental implant recovery with clear instructions and close follow-up care.

Restoring Implant Crowns and Prosthetics

Even a well-placed dental implant may need attention over time. While the titanium post is designed to last, the visible restoration—whether a crown, bridge, or denture—can wear down, loosen, or break.

Common reasons for implant restoration include:

  • Chips, cracks, or wear on the crown
  • Loosening of the prosthetic over the abutment
  • Esthetic updates to improve appearance
  • Changes in gum tissue or bite alignment

Implant restorations can often be repaired or replaced without disturbing the implant itself. Using in-house scanning and design tools, new crowns or prosthetics can be created to restore full function and blend seamlessly with the rest of the smile.

FAQs About Dental Implants

How long do dental implants last?

The implant itself can last a lifetime with proper care. The restoration may need repair or replacement after 10 to 15 years due to normal wear. Regular dental visits and good oral hygiene help extend the life of both.

Do dental implants hurt?

Most patients feel only mild soreness after the procedure. We use local anesthesia and offer sedation to keep you comfortable during treatment.

How long is the recovery period?

Initial healing takes about one to two weeks. Full osseointegration can take three to six months depending on your health and treatment plan.

Will my insurance cover dental implants?

It depends on your plan. Some insurance policies contribute to certain parts of implant treatment, such as the consultation, imaging, or restoration. We will check your benefits ahead of time and walk you through what is covered and what to expect.
