Frenectomy in Midlothian, VA

A tight band of tissue beneath the tongue or between the lips and gums can restrict normal movement and affect speech, eating, oral hygiene, or the fit of dental appliances.

At Angus Dentistry, we perform gentle frenectomy procedures to improve function, comfort, and overall oral health.

What Is a Frenectomy?

A frenectomy is a minor surgical procedure that removes or reshapes a small fold of tissue called the frenum that restricts movement in the mouth. There are three types of frenum in the mouth, and each can affect oral function differently:

  • Lingual frenum: A tight or short frenum under the tongue can cause a tongue-tie, which limits movement and may lead to speech difficulties, infant feeding issues, and breathing problems.
  • Labial frenum: A tight frenum inside the upper lip can make brushing and flossing difficult, cause gum recession, or lead to spacing between the front teeth.
  • Buccal frenum: Found inside the cheek near the molars, this frenum can sometimes pull on the gums causing recession or interfere with denture fit.

When these tissues interfere with normal oral function or comfort, a frenectomy can help improve mobility, prevent complications, and support better oral health.

Common Reasons for a Frenectomy

Frenectomies are commonly performed to treat:

  • Ankyloglossia: Also known as a tongue-tie, it can lead to speech impediments, challenges with breastfeeding, discomfort while eating or speaking, or contribute to sleep apnea.
  • Lip-ties: May cause gum recession, interfere with brushing and flossing, or create spacing between front teeth.
  • Orthodontic or prosthetic concerns: A tight frenum can affect how braces work or how dentures fit.
  • Oral discomfort or restrictions: Persistent tension, irritation, or challenges with movement.

We routinely perform frenectomy procedures for infants, children, teens, and adults, always with gentle techniques and your comfort in mind.

Electrosurgery for Frenectomy

We use electrosurgery to perform most frenectomies. It involves using a high-frequency electrical current to carefully remove or reshape the frenum. This approach allows for precise tissue control with minimal bleeding, making it a safe and effective option for patients of all ages.

Electrosurgery offers several benefits when used for frenectomy procedures:

  • Gentle, targeted treatment with minimal impact on surrounding areas
  • Minimal bleeding during the procedure
  • Shorter procedure time
  • Reduced need for sutures
  • Faster healing
  • Less trauma to the surrounding tissue

Compared to using a scalpel or surgical scissors, electrosurgery causes less bleeding and reduces trauma to nearby tissues. This results in a more comfortable procedure and a quicker, smoother recovery for most patients.

What to Expect During a Frenectomy Procedure

Whether you are navigating speech concerns, breastfeeding challenges, orthodontic issues, or another oral restriction, our dedicated team is here to help. We take the time to explain every step of the process and provide exceptional care that puts your comfort and clarity first.

Here’s how it typically works:

  1. Evaluation and diagnosis: We begin with a gentle oral exam and, if needed, may use imaging to better understand the anatomy and plan the best treatment approach.
  2. Treatment planning: Based on age, oral anatomy, and your specific symptoms, we recommend the best approach for safe and effective treatment.
  3. Anesthesia and sedation: Most patients only need a topical anesthetic or local numbing. We also offer sedation options if you suffer from dental anxiety.
  4. Frenectomy surgery: We use electrosurgery to carefully release the frenum. This technique uses a controlled electrical current to remove soft tissue with precision while minimizing bleeding and supporting a clean, efficient procedure.
  5. Post-procedure guidance: We review recovery tips, stretches if needed, and any follow-up care to support a short and smooth frenectomy recovery.

I have to admit I was not relishing the thought of having Two crowns that were in need of repair done at the same time , but then again it would be done with. I can’t really explain how stunned I was that it was all done in Two hours with the most professional and comforting care. Technology has come a long way in being able to have a real crown made and put on in this amount of time. I can’t thank Dr Rebecca Angus and her staff for their care, concern and professionalism.

I have been going here for about 40 years. I have always been satisfied with the staff, the hygienists, and the dentists I have seen, from Dr Bill to Dr. Rebecca. There are never long waits in the waiting room, and for me, appointments have not been hard to get. I always recommend them to anyone looking for a dentist. I might add I have not had dental insurance for years, until a year ago. They only take one, Delta. This is a consideration for new patients. Mine kicked in in Nov, 2025, thankfully! I am grateful that they were always helpful when I had difficulty paying. We worked it out. I want to add that all of the staff there that I have encountered were professional and personable. When I had a crown done, I was surprised that they make them on site. I got to sit and relax while it was made and shaped just for me....and it didnt take long. Techniques and procedures and equipment have changed over these 40 some years, and they have kept up and deliver the best. Yes, I do recommend Angus Dentistry to anyone who asks for a recommendation, and to some who dont....lol !
