What Is TMJ Disorder?

TMJ disorder (also known as TMD) refers to dysfunction of the temporomandibular joint, the hinge that connects your jawbone to your skull.

This complex joint allows for smooth movement while speaking, chewing, and smiling. But when it becomes inflamed or misaligned, it can cause a variety of painful and frustrating symptoms.

Common TMJ symptoms include:

  • Jaw pain or stiffness
  • Clicking, popping, or grinding sounds
  • Difficulty opening or closing your mouth “locked jaw”
  • Frequent headaches or facial pain
  • Neck pain and shoulder tension
  • Earaches or a feeling of fullness in the ears
  • Dizziness or balance issues

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, your dentist will evaluate your bite, jaw alignment, and muscle function to determine the underlying cause and recommend the most effective treatment approach.

What Causes TMJ Disorder?

TMJ dysfunction can stem from a variety of factors, including:

  • Teeth grinding or clenching (often at night)
  • Displaced discs in the joints
  • Jaw injury or trauma
  • Head injury or trauma
  • Arthritis or joint disorder
  • Bite misalignment
  • Muscle tension
  • Neck &/or shoulder injury, trauma, or arthritis
  • Connective tissue conditions (Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome)

Some patients develop symptoms gradually, while others notice a sudden onset after dental work, physical or emotional stress, or trauma. Regardless of the cause, we will work closely with you to identify contributing factors and design a plan that fits your goals.

Your TMJ Consultation at Angus Dentistry
Your first visit includes a thorough examination, digital imaging of the joint if needed, and a personalized discussion of your symptoms. We take the time to listen, explain, and guide you toward the most effective TMJ treatment, always with your comfort and long-term health in mind.
Our dentists offer exceptional care for a wide range of jaw issues, from stiff muscles to complex joint disorders. If you are looking for a TMJ specialist near Richmond, VA, we’re here to help.

TMJ Treatment Options

We prioritize conservative TMJ treatments whenever possible. Each custom treatment plan is based on your unique symptoms, lifestyle, and how your jaw joint responds to therapy.

1. TMJ Mouth Guards & Splints

Also called bite guards or night guards for TMJ, these custom-fit oral appliances cushion the teeth and stabilize the jaw. They can be worn day and or night to reduce teeth grinding (bruxism), prevent joint strain, and stabilize the joints. TMJ splints can help alleviate pain, reduce muscle spasms, and improve alignment over time.

2. Neurotoxin (Botox) for TMJ

TMJ Botox injections relax overactive jaw muscles to relieve tension and reduce inflammation. Especially helpful for patients with severe clenching or chronic pain, Botox therapy can offer significant relief without altering your bite. Dr. Angus has advanced training in using neurotoxin therapy for both cosmetic and therapeutic purposes.

3. Bite Adjustment and Orthodontic Solutions

In some cases, a misaligned bite or uneven pressure on the teeth may contribute to TMJ symptoms. We may recommend minor dental adjustments or orthodontic treatment with Invisalign to improve your bite and relieve strain on the joint.

4. Trigger Point Injections

Trigger point injections target painful knots in the jaw or neck muscles. These injections typically involve a small amount of anesthetic delivered directly into the affected muscle. This helps relieve muscle tightness, improve mobility, and reduce referred pain associated with TMJ and craniofacial disorders.

5. Physical Therapy and Home Remedies

We will likely refer you to a physical therapist who specializes in disorders of the TMJ, prescribe anti-inflammatory medications for pain, and at-home care remedies to support long-term relief. Our team will provide detailed care instructions to guide your recovery.

I have to admit I was not relishing the thought of having Two crowns that were in need of repair done at the same time , but then again it would be done with. I can’t really explain how stunned I was that it was all done in Two hours with the most professional and comforting care. Technology has come a long way in being able to have a real crown made and put on in this amount of time. I can’t thank Dr Rebecca Angus and her staff for their care, concern and professionalism.

I have been going here for about 40 years. I have always been satisfied with the staff, the hygienists, and the dentists I have seen, from Dr Bill to Dr. Rebecca. There are never long waits in the waiting room, and for me, appointments have not been hard to get. I always recommend them to anyone looking for a dentist. I might add I have not had dental insurance for years, until a year ago. They only take one, Delta. This is a consideration for new patients. Mine kicked in in Nov, 2025, thankfully! I am grateful that they were always helpful when I had difficulty paying. We worked it out. I want to add that all of the staff there that I have encountered were professional and personable. When I had a crown done, I was surprised that they make them on site. I got to sit and relax while it was made and shaped just for me....and it didnt take long. Techniques and procedures and equipment have changed over these 40 some years, and they have kept up and deliver the best. Yes, I do recommend Angus Dentistry to anyone who asks for a recommendation, and to some who dont....lol !

How to Prevent TMJ Flare-Ups

There are a few simple steps you can take at home or work to help prevent TMJ symptoms from becoming more severe, or to avoid triggering them in the first place:

  • Relax your face. Remember the rule: “Lips together, teeth apart”
  • Avoid grinding your teeth or clenching your jaw
  • Avoid constant gum chewing and hard to chew foods
  • Hold the phone with your hand or use a headset (not your shoulder)
  • Chew food evenly on both sides of your mouth
  • Avoid resting your chin on your hand
  • Get regular neck and head massages if possible
  • Try these 6 exercises 6 times a day
  • Practice good posture: keep your head up, back straight, and shoulders relaxed
  • Exercise regularly and stay hydrated

We will help you identify patterns and build habits that protect your jaw joint and support recovery.

We participate with Delta Dental PPO Plus Premier plans and can help you make the most of your benefits, and we accept payment from all major dental insurance companies. As an in-network provider, we help patients maximize their benefits while receiving expert, personalized care that fits their coverage. We proudly serve Midlothian and Richmond and the Greater Richmond area with personalized, high-quality dental care.

FAQs About TMJ Treatment

Can TMJ cause dizziness or nausea?

Because the temporomandibular joint is close to inner ear structures, dysfunction can affect balance and cause symptoms like dizziness or nausea.

How do I know if I have TMJ or something else?

We evaluate your dental bite, joint function, muscle health, and medical history to rule out other conditions. TMJ often mimics other issues like ear infections, migraines, or sinus problems.

Do I need a referral to see a TMJ specialist?

No referral is needed. Dr. Angus has specialized training in TMJ therapy and offers a wide range of diagnostic and treatment services in-house.

Is Botox for TMJ covered by insurance?

In most cases it does not. Coverage varies, so we will help you review your benefits and determine eligibility.

Can a TMJ night guard really help?

A custom TMJ night guard can relieve pressure on the joint, prevent teeth grinding, and reduce inflammation, helping to ease symptoms and protect your oral health over time.

Does TMJ go away on its own?

In mild cases, TMJ symptoms may resolve with rest, stress management, and minor bite adjustments. If you have sudden onset of pain, clicking, popping or jaw locking/out of alignment, it is important to be evaluated and treated as soon as possible..

Do you offer TMJ treatment for teens or younger patients?

TMJ can affect patients of all ages. We tailor our care to fit the needs of adolescents and young adults who may be developing early symptoms.

Where can I find a TMJ specialist in Midlothian?

You can find TMJ care at Angus Dentistry in Midlothian, VA. Our team offers diagnosis and treatment for TMJ disorders, including custom nightguards, trigger point therapy, and neurotoxin injections when appropriate. Call (804) 794-6893 to schedule a consultation.
